Unexpected course conditions

April 5, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---Usually the course gets faster and faster as the week goes on, especially with no rain. But this year is a little different when it comes to the speed.

Talk about fast greens...real fast. That's what the best in the business found out today. With no rains, Thursday greens are like Sunday.

To even make things more interesting, the fairways aren't running out quite as much as some of the shorter hitters had hoped. Long approach shots with fast greens mean high scores, with just one golfer breaking 70 today.

What does it mean for the rest of the week? Well, that all depends.

Many of the best in the world weighed in, saying three to five under par might win this year, especially if the greens get even faster and faster as the week goes on.
