AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- Justin Rose and Brett Wetterich each shot 3 under par 69 to share the lead after the first round of the Masters. They were the only two players to break 70 over a windy, tricky opening round at Augusta National.
David Howell and David Toms are tied at 2 under 70, just ahead a group of five at 71, including Augusta resident Vaughn Taylor.
Davis Love III shot even par along with four others, while Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh are among another group of five who shot one over 73's.
The defending champion, Phil Mickelson, found himself constantly having to hit out of trees and fairway bunkers in a front nine.
That did some damage to his hopes of becoming only the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters.
He ended with a 4 over 76 but said even par will be in contention going into the weekend. Mickelson said all he has to do is shoot a 68 tomorrow.
