One of those being vocal about the course changes is none other than Jack Nicklaus. Of course with the equipment changes and just the pure strength of today's hitters, the ball is going a lot farther.
Ah yes...the ball. Nicklaus says maybe that's the solution: Instead of adding all the length and trees, cut back on the distance the ball travels. Obviously the technology is there for a shorter ball flight.
"I promise you it's very simple to bring that ball back 10% and still keep the same characteristics," Nicklaus says. "It's not a big deal. Why do you need to change the size of it? Let everybody play with what they normally play with. They don't have to change drivers, they don't have to change irons, they don't have to do anything."
"I think the next five years it'll happen," says Gary Player. "I know a lot of people are reluctant to change and say they don't want to do it; they're going to have to do it. [Stewart] Appleby last year must have hit seven drives of 400 yards."
