A year ago, the Greenbrier volleyball team was feeling it. The Lady Wolfpack was rolling along and imagining state rings.
Then they ran into a buzz saw in the Sweet Sixteen and that was it.
Don't think these ladies have forgotten.
"Last year we made it to the Sweet Sixteen, so we would definitely like to surpass that," said senior setter Hayley Hughes. "Certainly State is a goal we would love to achieve."
They aren't just throwing pennies in the well with the wish of a state title. At 31-1, Greenbrier is easily the most accomplished team in the area so far, and it has everything to do with the mental make up of this squad.
Head Coach Debbie Born said, "They have the attitude of 'Let's just get it done. Let's have fun and let's get it done, and let's have a great year.' So, they know what the expectations are."
They've been getting it done, even if the voters haven't noticed. The Lady Wolfpack has the best record in 5A, but they're only ninth in the rankings.
Of course, they see that as an advantage.
"I think being ranked so low in the state is a good thing because they won't be expecting how well we can play," said senior libero Sarah Sather. "And I think we've definitely proven ourselves to be higher than No. 9."
No doubt, the Greenbrier ladies are chasing some unfinished business, but accomplishing that state championship goal isn't the only thing that matters.
Sather said, "I would love to make it to State; State Finals, Final Four; I would push for Final Four, but I'm very happy with how we've played so far."
Hughes added, "As long as we played our hearts out and did the best that we could on the court, then we'll always come out as winners."
