The school year's nearing its end at local high schools, but we still have time for a few more college signings before another class graduates.
Wednesday the action was at Westside, where the Lady Patriots basketball team sent two to the next level.
Point guard Christina Thomas and post Azia Gibson helped turn the program around at Westside, and now they hope to provide more of the same presense in college.
For Thomas, it's a trip to Milledgeville to play for Georgia College.
For Gibson, it's a trip the other way down I-20 to Columbia College.
They may be heading their separate ways, but the feelings are mutual on this day.
"This day means a lot to me," Thomas said. "It's a lot for Westside as well as my family. This is not only an accomplishment for me, but for all of those who have helped me get to this place today."
Gibson added, "I've been thinking about this since I first came to Westside sophomore year. I don't think it's really registered yet that it's official, but it's still a fun day. I'm glad everyone was here to see me sign."
These two have been big leaders for this team the last couple years, and now they have the chance to show it again. They're hoping this signing will motivate their younger teammates to strive for the same.
"We're definitely hoping this will motivate them," Thomas said. "We have some tough years to come, and we have some with great potential to move on. So, we're hoping this will inspire them to push even harder and do even better than we have done."
Coach Ivory Hugee may have to replace these two, but he expects more success in years to come.
