Dec. 23, 2013 AUGUSTA, Ga. -- GRU Augusta’s Ryan Weems was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday after the pacing the Jaguars to a pair of victories last week.
A senior shooting guard from Miramar, Fla., Weems averaged 23.0 points per game as the Jaguars picked up a 60-56 road win at No. 10 Montevallo on Tuesday, Dec. 17. GRU extended its winning streak to six games on Sunday, Dec. 22 with a 70-65 win over Mount Olive in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Weems canned four 3-pointers and booked 24 points as GRU knocked 10th-ranked Montevallo from the ranks of the undefeated. Five days later, Weems notched 22 points against Mount Olive. He added 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point range.
An all-conference selection as a junior, Weems connected on 19-of-25 free throws (76.0 percent) in the two contests. In fact, he has made more free throws than any other player in the PBC and ranks seventh in the league in steals and 12th in scoring at 16.4 ppg.
Weems has scored in double figures in nine of 11 games and is averaging 18.6 ppg. over his last five games. He has led the Jags in scoring four times, including each of the last three contests.
With the selection, Weems is the first Jaguar to earn the league’s weekly honor since Devon Wright-Nelson on Feb. 6, 2012.
The Jags return from the holiday break on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 when they host Francis Marion in a Peach Belt Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
