USCA's Byers named PBC volleyballer of the week

AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball player Shannon Byers has been chosen as the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

The league office made the announcement on Monday afternoon.

Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault HS) is the second Pacer to be named the league’s Player of the Week this season. USC Aiken freshman Ashley Deidrich (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips HS) received the honor on Monday, Sept. 17.

A three-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection, Byers wins the weekly honor for the first time in her career.

Byers hit .303 for the Pacers in their perfect 4-0 week last week. She averaged 4.18 kills per set. The senior in total had 46 kills and 29 digs last week.

Byers opened last week with a double-double in USC Aiken’s 3-1 win over Augusta State. She closed out the win over the Jaguars with 16 kills and 11 digs.

In the Pacer win over UNC Pembroke on Friday, Sept. 28, Byers claimed 12 kills while hitting .478. She pounded out 13 kills in the win over Francis Marion on Saturday, Sept. 29. She had eight digs in both the wins over UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion. Byers closed out the week with five kills in a dominating Pacer win over Clark Atlanta.

She also had two service aces, two blocks and three assists last week.

Byers is presently 10th in the PBC in kills with 148 on the season. She is ninth in the league in kills per set (2.74). In conference matches only, Byers leads the league in kills (41) and kills per set (4.10).

Byers is also currently 16th in the league in digs with 144.

Byers and the rest of the Pacer volleyball team are currently in the midst of a nine-match winning streak.

USC Aiken next begins what will be a six-match road swing with two matches in Montevallo, Ala. on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Pacers will play league foe Montevallo first at 1 p.m. They will then square off with Alabama Huntsville at 3 p.m. The Alabama Huntsville match is USC Aiken's final non-conference match of the season.
