USC Aiken ladies impressive in NCAA tournament opener

MORROW, Ga. – The regionally fifth-seeded University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team claimed a dominating 94-71 victory over regionally fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Southeast Regional quarterfinals at the Athletics & Fitness Center on the campus of Clayton State.

USC Aiken (22-7) has now claimed an NCAA Tournament victory in each of the last three seasons.

The regional quarterfinal victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (19-10) moves the Pacers on to the semifinal round of the Southeast Regional where they will face off against national No. 1 and regional top-seeded Clayton State (30-0) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 16.

The winner of the USC Aiken-Clayton State semifinal will advance to the regional championship game at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 18.

USC Aiken rushed out to a 9-1 advantage over the course of the first two minutes of the game.

With just over 8:30 to play in the first half, the Pacers had pushed their lead to 17 points at 30-13. The Pacers still owned a 17-point lead at 39-22 with under five minutes to play in the opening stanza.

The Pacers would enter the halftime break with a 21-point lead at 52-31.

USC Aiken concluded the first half shooting 63.6 percent (21-for-33) as a team. The Pacers knocked down 60 percent (6-of-10) of their 3-point attempts in the inaugural half of action.

Three Pacers combined to score 46 of USC Aiken’s 52 points in the opening half.

Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) led the Pacers in the first half with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Tarailo knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half.

Porsha Martin (Douglasville, Ga./South Paulding HS) closed out the first half with 16 points, while Mackenzie Reese (Madison, Wis./Edgewood HS) came off the bench to score 11 points in the first half.
