USC Aiken golf team ranked sixth in the nation

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s golf team is ranked sixth in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Preseason Poll as voted on by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

The Pacers finished the 2012-13 season seventh at the NCAA National Championships, where the squad advanced to the match play quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

USC Aiken claimed the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Championship and were ranked as high as No. 3 nationally.

Seven student-athletes return from last year’s squad. The team also has six newcomers.

Head coach Michael Carlisle, in his 24th season, and the Pacers open their fall season Sept. 16-17 at the Kiawah Island Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.

“We are looking forward to this year’s schedule,” head coach Mike Carlisle said. “We have a lot of talent returning and our newcomers are very good. This year’s schedule should be very competitive.”

Four PBC schools earned a spot in the preseason top 25 as Columbus State is seventh, Georgia College is 16th and Armstrong is 20th. Georgia Southwestern, Flagler, UNC-Pembroke and North Georgia all received votes in the top 25.
