Sandersville, GA -- Two Brentwood football players will miss Friday's first round playoff game after an ugly incident in last Thursday's game at Memorial Day.

Sophomore defensive end Garrett Senter and junior lineman Cody Deal were suspended for leaving the sideline during an altercation between the Eagles' Zach Smith and a Memorial Day player.

With about 30 seconds until halftime, Smith (an offensive tackle) and the other player got tied up on a Brentwood run play. According to Eagles' Head Coach Bert Brown, the defender grabbed Smith by the face mask, forcing him to the ground. Then, he pulled up on the helmet, forcing it off Smith's head and threw it down, striking Smith in the back of the head.

The player was immediately ejected, but in the commotion, players from both teams left the sideline, Senter and Deal included. Neither was involved in the play or the aftermath, but state rules indicate players leaving the sideline be suspended for the next game.

Smith was uninjured on the play, and Brentwood snapped the ball one more time before the half. During the break, officials decided the game should be ended because of safety concerns. Memorial Day was awarded the 28-0 win.

Brentwood goes on the road this week at two-time defending state champion Piedmont. The Eagles beat the Cougars 14-6 earlier this season.

As for Memorial Day, there's been no word on the fate of the offending player or any others on the team. The Blue Thunder open the playoffs Friday at Flint River Academy.

Brentwood and Memorial Day wouldn't meet again until the state championship game.
