AUGUSTA, Ga. – Texas captured its second consecutive Insperity Augusta State Invitational title in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon at Forest Hills Golf Club.

The fourth-ranked Longhorns edged the host Jaguars by two shots down the stretch when UT freshman Brandon Stone carded birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. ASU’s Robin Petersson, playing alongside Stone, birdied the 18th hole for the final margin.

The victory was the second in as many years for the Longhorns over ASU. Texas, the defending national champions and highest ranked team in the field, carded a 3-under 285 on the day. With a 4-under 284, Virginia Tech bested the Longhorns by one shot for the day’s low round. Georgia took third, one shot back of the Jags, while the Hokies moved up to fourth and South Carolina was fifth.

Coastal Carolina senior Sebastian Soderberg fired a 6-under 66 in regulation, then outlasted Central Florida’s Greg Eason in a tourney-record, five-hole playoff to claim medalist honors. Soderberg, who began the day in 11th place, became the second Chanticleer to win the Insperity title, joining former All-American Dustin Johnson (2007).

Soderberg and Eason both birdied the first playoff hole, the drivable par-4 18th, and then made three straight pars. On the fifth extra hole, Soderberg layed up with a 5-iron off the tee and wedged his approach just over the back of the green. He then drained a 15-foot uphill putt for birdie for his first win of the season and second of his collegiate career.

“Yesterday, on the first hole of the day I made about a 50-footer up the hill,” Soderberg said. “This is my fourth year playing here and yesterday was the first time I shot in the 60’s at Forest Hills. My game is just so much better than it has been in the last three years. In the past I’ve always hit the ball pretty good, but the putting has always been an issue and now I’m more of a mature putter and stay patient.”

Augusta State, which was seeking its third tournament title of the season, combined for a 1-over 289 after leading for much of the day. The Jags were paced by a pair of 1-under 71’s from senior Derek Chang and sophomore Cody Shafer. Chang birdied three of his last four holes to finish at 5-under 211 and alone in third place. Petersson tied for fifth at 3-under 213 following a 1-over 73 and Shafer tied for 19th at 3-over 219. Junior Alex Wennstam tied for 33rd at 6-over 222 following his third straight 74 and freshman Maverick Antcliff tied for 45th at 9-over 225 following a 75.

The two-day, 54-hole event once again featured one of the top fields of any men’s intercollegiate tournament in the country. Of the 15 teams in the field, 13 were ranked in the top 50. The 2013 tournament marked the 35th edition of the event and the ninth year of Insperity (formerly Administaff) serving as title sponsor of the tourney.

The field included ASU, No. 40 Baylor, No. 39 UCF, No. 28 Clemson, No. 47 Coastal Carolina, No. 14 Georgia, No. 25 Houston, No. 24 Illinois, Purdue, No. 16 SMU, No. 35 South Carolina, No. 23 Tennessee, No. 4 Texas, No. 3 USC Aiken and No. 37 Virginia Tech.

The Longhorns nipped Augusta State in a two-hole playoff in 2012 to capture the team title. Texas and ASU both fired a 26-under 838, the third-lowest total in tournament history. TCU freshman Julien Brun bested Dylan Fritelli of Texas by a single stroke to earn medalist honors. ASU has won eight of the last 15 team titles and Jaguars have won two of the last four individual crowns.
