JOHNSTON, SC-- He's been a staple on the Strom Thurmond sideline for 10 years, but head football coach Lee Sawyer has decided the 2013 season was his last.

The longtime Rebels coach turned in his resignation Friday. His players were informed of the decision Monday.

After 30 years of coaching, 10 years as the Rebels head coach, Sawyer decided that he was done.

"I've had a ball, but it's time to move on. I don't want to be one of those guys people feel sorry for, that hung on too long," Sawyer said.

Sawyer finished with 107 wins, including a state championship in 2005. The search for a new Strom Thurmond coach begins immediately.
