AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta softball program and head coach Melissa Mullins added to her catching arsenal Tuesday with the signing of Laini Frye, a 5-7 catcher with experience at third base and shortstop.
Recently graduating from Silver Bluff High School in Beech Island, S.C., Frye will join the Jaguars for the 2014 season as a true freshman. As a senior in 2013 with the Silver Bluff Lady Bulldogs, Frye earned best defensive athlete and was named the Most Outstanding Senior Female Athlete and Most Outstanding Academic Female Athlete for her high school.
“I am so excited to have Laini join our program and I think she is a real steal this late in the recruiting game,” Mullins said. “When my assistants and I watched her play, we were instantly impressed with her hustle and with how she commanded the game. I think she will bring a lot to our program this fall.”
An All-Region player for all four years of high school, Frye was the 2013 Scholar Athlete for Silver Bluff and maintained full involvement in Beta Club, National Honors Society, Student Council and Honor Roll during her tenure. Frye recorded a .331 career batting average for the Lady Bulldogs, totaling 35 doubles, nine triples and 13 home runs from the right side.
Frye joins a list of new signees that committed in the early signing period: Julia Banks (DP/UT from Decatur, Ga.), Ashley Benton (OF from Watkinsville, Ga.), Brianna Dickens (SS from Watkinsville, Ga.), and Mallory Ferguson (C from Guyton, Ga.).
