Petticoat Junction, SC--It's been 12 long years since Silver Bluff has played for a state title. 12 years of being close, but not close enough. That all ends this Friday in Columbia as they'll for a sixth crown in the history of the program.
The walls of the cafeteria at Silver Bluff are lined with giant team pictures. Pictures representing the five state championships the Bulldogs have. Reminder to the kids today of where this program has been and wants to be again.
"It' definitely means a lot more, just to know that we have a great opportunity this Friday to actually get our whole team up here" said Gysai Yeldell
Rewind to 2001 A much younger Al Lown at the helm as the Bulldogs won 30 straight games and back to back state titles.
"if they're all going to be like this, I don't know if I can survive another one like this" said Al Lown in 2001
Two of the stars from that game, Troy Williamson and Joe Wilson. They accounted for the three touchdowns, and are still working together today, at Williamson's sandwich shop in Aiken.
"Our team, we went out and it was almost like we knew we were going to win and we didn't think anybody can beat us" said Joe Wilson
"Everybody that I talk to, or that I talk to home, or from here that I played with, and especially now, it's something we'll talk about from here on out" said Troy Williamson
Matt Hayes played on the 2000 title team, he's now an assistant for the Bluff.
"We had banners everywhere, every restraunt we passed in Jackson, New Ellenton, and Beach Island had win state" said Matt Hayes
Three little communities bound by one thing...Silver bluff high school
"This week I might throw some more stuff on from Silver Bluff just to let people know where I came from and the school that I played at" added Williamson
Matter of fact, several coaches remain in tact today from the last two championships.
This year's squad very similiar to when they last one. Seniors dominate with 15 on the roster, all hoping to hoist the trophy and have their team picture on the walls of the Bluff.
Silver Bluff plays Batesburg Leesville for the title on Friday. The same team they beat on an incomplete two point conversion in 2001. Yes, history repeating itself. Game time is 5:30 at Benedict College.
