Seven Pacers named All-Region by NCBWA

AIKEN, S.C. – Seven University of South Carolina Aiken baseball players received All-Southeast Region honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

The NCBWA All-Southeast Region Team was unveiled on Sunday, May 19, 2013.

USC Aiken junior closer Taylor Grover was chosen to the First-Team as a relief pitcher. As a First-Team choice he is now eligible for All-America honors from the NCBWA.

Three Pacers were selected to the Second-Team in junior starting pitcher Derek Beasley, sophomore second baseman Ryan Metzler and senior designated hitter Bill Gerstenslager.

USC Aiken senior starting pitcher Ryan Milewski, senior outfielder Bryce Baur and senior utility player Josh Miller were tabbed to the Third-Team.

Grover (North Augusta, S.C./Midland Valley HS) led the Pacers and the Peach Belt Conference with 11 saves on the 2013 season. The 11 saves place the Daktronics First-Team All-Region selection in the top-10 in the category nationally.

The First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference selection owned a perfect 5-0 record on the year with a 0.92 earned run average. The Pacer closer made 31 appearances in the 2013 season, pitching a total of 29.1 innings. Grover's foes hit just .154 against him this past season. He had 37 strikeouts in his 29.1 innings pitched.

Beasley (Harlem, Ga./Harlem HS) led the Pacers and was second in the Peach Belt Conference with nine wins in the 2013 season. Beasley was 9-2 on the year.

The First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference selection was tied for the conference lead with seven wins in league play. He was 7-0 in league action.

Beasley led the Pacers and was third in the Peach Belt Conference with 89 strikeouts on the 2013 season. Beasley fanned five or more in a single game 11 times this past season. He struck out 11 in a Pacer win over Francis Marion on Feb. 24.

Beasley made 15 starts in total on the 2013 season. He pitched a total of 85.1 innings. The Daktronics Second-Team All-Region selection was chosen Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on April 8.

A First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference selection, Metzler was fourth among all Pacers with a .357 batting average (75-for-210). He started all 55 games at second base for the nationally third-ranked Pacers.

Metzler (Glen Burnie, Md./Siena) scored 48 runs to go along with his 46 RBIs this past season. He had 20 extra-base hits on the year on 12 doubles, seven home runs and one triple. Metzler collected a total of 110 bases on the 2013 season.

Metzler was third among all Pacers with 24 multiple hit games. He had 13 multiple RBI games. In the field, Metzler had 155 assists and 106 putouts. The 155 assists place the Daktronics First-Team All-Region selection in the top-10 in the PBC in the category.

Gerstenslager (Solon, Ohio/Mercyhurst) led the Pacers with a team-best .380 (81-for-213) batting average. He led the Pacers and the Peach Belt Conference with 21 doubles on the 2013 season. The 21 doubles are currently in the top-10 in the nation.

The Pacer designated hitter led USC Aiken with 30 extra-base hits on the year on the 21 doubles, seven home runs and two triples. He collected 127 bases and scored 53 runs to go along with his 54 RBIs. The senior designated hitter had 16 multiple RBI games in the 2013 season. He had 25 multiple hit games.

A Tino Martinez Award semifinalist and a Daktronics First-Team All-Region selection, Gerstenslager was also recently named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference First-Team, the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team and the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Baseball District Three First-Team.

Milewski (West Boylston, Mass./West Boylston HS) owned a 6-3 record in the 2013 season for the Pacers. He pitched a total of 77 innings and struck out 54.

The 2012 and 2013 All-Peach Belt Conference selection held his opponents to a .292 batting average in the 2013 season.

Milewski was twice named Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week this past season (March 5 and April 29).

Milewski was also recently named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team and the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Baseball District Three First-Team.

A First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference selection and a semifinalist for the Josh Willingham Award, Baur (Moncks Corner, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech) finished fourth in the Peach Belt Conference and in the top-10 nationally with 83 hits on the 2013 season. He was tops among all Pacers in the 2013 season with 27 multiple hit games. Baur had nine multiple RBI games.

Baur posted a .358 batting average (83-for-232) for the nationally third-ranked Pacers in the 2013 season. He started all 55 games for USC Aiken in the outfield.

Baur led the Pacers and is in the top-10 in the PBC with 56 runs scored on the 2013 season. Baur had 42 RBIs on the year. The senior collected a total of 112 bases.

Baur was a perfect 17-of-17 on stolen base attempts. The 17 steals place him in the top-10 in the PBC in the category.

Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin HS) played in 53 games this season for the Pacers. He started 52 at either catcher or left field.

Miller hit .355 (76-for-214) on the 2013 season. He scored 53 runs, while driving in 46. The 53 runs place him in the top-15 in the PBC in the category.

Miller obtained 24 extra-base hits on 18 doubles and six home runs. The 18 doubles place him in the top-10 in the PBC in the category.

The two-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection collected a total of 112 bases this season. The Daktronics Second-Team All-Region selection had 14 steals on the year. The senior has 293 putouts and 25 assists in the field. The two-time All-Regions selection had 23 multiple hit games and a team third-best 15 multiple RBI games.
