AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- If you don't know a heck of a lot about the sport of rugby, head over to North Augusta Middle School on Saturday. It's called the Back 9 Sevens tournament featuring the Augusta Maddogs.
Fast-paced, at times hard-hitting action with plenty of scoring. Usually rugby features 15 players. But the 7's events have taken off nationwide. A usually slower paced game is now full throttle on the same sized field with lots of scoring and all the tactics still involved.
"You have nothing but quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers so it's very fast paced, it's very explosive," said Eric Rogers. "American football there's a touchdown every 14 minutes and in rugby 7s, there's a try, our touchdowns, every 62 seconds is the statistic."
While rugby usually features the bigger guys, the 7's are geared more towards athletes who can cover the ground. Eric Rogers says it's a game full of passionate players that will hit you on the field, but have a drink with you afterward.
Yes, women also play and will be part of Saturday's tournament.
