Augusta, GA--Shawn Skelly netted the deciding goal for the Augusta RiverHawks in the shootout as RiverHawks prevailed over Mississippi RiverKings, 4-3 (1-0 SO).
The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout.
Augusta overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The RiverHawks trailed 3-2 after a power play goal by Mississippi RiverKings' Steven Kaunisto at 2:07 in the third period. Augusta tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Casey Mignone at 19:48 in the third period.
Mignone was all over the ice for the RiverHawks, as he had two goals in the win.
With 25 shots on target during the contest, Augusta exceeded the 22.3 shots it averages per game this year.
Kyle Watson also scored for Augusta. In addition, Augusta received assists from Matt Auffrey, who had two and Curtis Megginson and Alex Morton, who each chipped in one.
Mississippi RiverKings put 46 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.7 it averages per game.
Mississippi RiverKings was helped by Darrell Stoddard, who racked up one goal and one assist. Stoddard scored 19:04 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Mike MacDonald assisted on the tally. Mississippi RiverKings additionally got points from MacDonald, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi RiverKings were Matt Harrington, Todd Hosmer, and Kyle Lundale, who contributed one a piece.
The RiverHawks' Robbie Moss stopped 43 shots out of the 46 that he faced. Augusta totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play.David Wilson rejected 21 shots on goal for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
The RiverHawks will be on the road until February 16. Their next contest is coming up on January 15 as the Team travels to Columbus to face the Cottonmouths. Fans can watch the road games live at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta.
