Reed's parents celebrate first PGA win

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- It was a big win for a former Augusta State University golfer. Patrick Reed clinched his first PGA tournament win at the Wyndham Championship Sunday. News 12 caught up with Reed's parents who live in Martinez, and they couldn't be happier.

They say it seems like yesterday when Patrick first picked up the game of golf.

His mother, Jeannette Reed, says, "Him and Bill did a father/son golf tournament at age 3, and everyone at our club was just amazed and said he's got this incredible talent. And Bill and I were going yeah right, at 3 ..."

Fast forward 20 years, and those prophecies are now a reality. On Sunday, the 23-year-old won his very first PGA tournament as he clinched the Wyndham Championship in the second hole of a playoff.

His mom says, "It just is very gratifying for your son to work at his dream, and it comes true."

His parents took a trip down memory lane in their Martinez home as they showed off a few of his awards over the years. One of their favorites: his back-to-back ASU national championships. But he'll be back in Augusta soon enough.

His father, Bill Reed, says, "His first major will be the Masters. I'm sure if he could've ever dreamed this scenario, it would've been this."

His dad remembers the first time they walked through the gates of Augusta National together just a few years ago.

I can remember Patrick and I walking into the gates and going, 'Oh my gosh.' And I can remember Patrick turning to me and going, 'I'm going to play here some day,'" he said.

And in less than 9 short months, he will be -- a dream come true for a toddler with a mean tee shot who grew into a champion.
