Pitching lifts the Pacers past Augusta State

AIKEN, S.C. – Derek Beasley and Zach Hayden combined to strike out 17 and the nationally 10th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team opened its three-game series with Augusta State with a 7-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over the Jaguars on Friday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

In moving to a perfect 9-0 on the year, Beasley (Harlem, Ga./Harlem HS) pitched the first six innings of the game. He fanned 10 and walked just two. Beasley allowed just two hits.

Hayden (Martinez, Ga./Middle Georgia) followed Beasley’s lead by striking out seven in his time on the hill for USC Aiken (28-8, 14-5 PBC). Jake Padgett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) then dealt a scoreless ninth to secure the six-run win for the Pacers.

The trio of Pacer pitchers only allowed three hits to the Jaguars.

Augusta State (10-26, 3-16 PBC) starter Kip Custer (5-5) suffered the loss. He pitched the first six innings of the game for the Jaguars, fanning five.

USC Aiken overall out-hit Augusta State, 8-3, in the game.

Josh Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin HS) led the Pacers in the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish. He had two doubles in the game. Miller scored twice and drove in another two in the Pacer victory.
