Jan. 11, 2013 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta Jaguars dropped their first Peach Belt Conference road game of the season in a 68-64 loss to the Armstrong Pirates Saturday night in the Alumni Arena.

Kelsey Fynaardt hit a jumper for the Jags’ (7-5, 3-2 PBC) first points of the game and helped GRU get to an 18-11 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play. Armstrong (8-4, 3-3) composed themselves with steady offense to go into the half with a one-bucket lead - up 32-30. After the Pirates pushed their lead in the early minutes of the second half, the Jags climbed back and tied the game at 36-all from a Fynaardt bucket. Fynaardt finished the night with 12 points and six rebounds.

It was a one-bucket affair until Armstrong’s Mauri Wells broke it open with two free throws. With 10:40 to go, Whitney Rohrbach cut the deficit to one and a possession later Fynnardt gave GRU a game-changing jumper to steal the lead. Tied at 55-all with under five minutes to go, both teams answered point for point until J’ Ashby hit both free throws to put the Jags up 64-61.

Armstrong’s Tyler Carson hit one off the glass and a layup from Bryonna Davis re-gave the advantage to the Pirates. A Jaguar turnover gave the ball back to the Pirates where they held on for a 68-64 final.

The Pirates outrebounded GRU 34-to-30 and were led by Brigitta Barta’s game-high 18 points, Amber Howell’s 17 points and Wells’ 14. The Jags’ Marissa Mandeldove posted a career-high 14 points, while Fynaardt notched 12 and Rohrbach 12.

The Jags got beat at the charity stripe, making 14 free throws to the Pirates’ 23. Despite the loss, GRU shot 48 percent from the floor to Armstrong’s 40. GRU continues league play with a PBC contest at Flagler on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
