Paine picks up SIAC weekly awards

Augusta, GA- Three Paine College Lion and Lady Lions basketball players have been chosen to receive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Player/Newcomer of the week. Paine College athletics has already received this honor three times this season.

Juniors Jerel Stephenson and Ariel Brown were selected as SIAC Men and Women’s Players of the Week respectively.

Stephenson, the 6’5 Forward from Augusta, Georgia made his first appearance on the hardwood in two seasons, led the Lions in a win over University of West Georgia, December 15 scoring 23 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and he added three assists in the 87-61 win.

Ariel Brown, the Savannah, Georgia native recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Edward Waters College, December 15. The 5’9 guard also recorded five steals in the 76-63 win to pace the Lady Lions.

Sophomore Guard Ashley Watts has been selected SIAC Newcomer of the week for the second time this season. The 5’6 Augusta, Georgia native recorded a game and season high 26 points to lead the Lady Lions in the win over Edward Waters College. Ashley also added five assists and three rebounds in Saturday’s contest.

Clark Atlanta Freshman Dwayne Bingham shared this week’s honor with Watts.
