AUBURN, Ala. - The Paine College men’s basketball team opened their season Nov. 1 with an exhibition game against Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent Auburn University. The Tigers from Auburn defeated the Lions 99-64.

For about the first ten minutes of the game, Paine hung especially close to Auburn even though Paine never held the lead. Auburn’s Chris Griffin scored the opening points on the game with a three-pointer that was followed up by a tip-in from Darius Smith. Paine played a high-pressure man-to-man defense against the Tigers and edged within one point of the lead after Kenny Fluellen sunk a big three with 13:25 remaining in the half to put the score at 20-21 in favor of the Tigers. Auburn then began to pull away from the Lions after a series of Paine turnovers and missed shots. The Lions went into the locker room at the half trailing the Tigers 31-52.

In the second half, Smith put up the first point in the half when he made a free throw following a foul from KT Harrell. There was then steady improvement for Paine as they cut their turnovers and increased their offensive rebounds, which helped the team to 11 second chance points in the second half.

Sean Morgan led the Purple and White in scoring after putting up 14 of his 16 points in the second half. Smith scored 14 and Fluellen scored 13. Auburn’s leading scorer was KT Harrel with 25 points.
