Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lions Golf team played extremely well on Tuesday to close out the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Golf classic. The annual event, held at Jones Creek Golf Course, was the second years in a row the Lions were able to finish the tournament as champions. “Our guys were extremely focused on the task at hand, they fought through adversity this year and that growth helped them become champions. I am tremendously proud of their effort”, said head coach Herman Belton.

After finishing the first day nine strokes ahead of their closest opponent, Morehouse College, Paine College wrapped up day two, 24 strokes ahead, improving 35 strokes from their last year’s win. At the end of the final day, the Lions total score was 643.

“I am ecstatic about the job that Coach Belton did this year. He had a talented group of young men and groomed them to reach their potential. That is what coaching is all about,” Director of Athletics Tim Duncan stated. We would not be here if not for the unwavering support of the Paine College Golf Committee and the participants of our annual tournament. Their loyal and consistent support provides us with the additional resources needed to reach the apex of the SIAC Conference.

Sophomore Carlos Solis finished in first place with a two round total of 150, freshman Jerrell Hubbard finished in second place with 155, and sophomore Victor Tapia finished in third with 157 points. All three Lion players were named to the All-Tournament Team, and Head Coach Herman Belton was named SIAC Golf Coach of the Year.

The Lions also walked away with multiple regular season awards. Carlos Solis was named SIAC 2013 Player of the Year and 1st Team All Conference, while Victor Tapia was named 2nd team All Conference and to the All Academic team.
