Paine College comes up short at Fort Valley

Jan. 18, 2014 FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Paine College men’s and women’s basketball teams lost to Fort Valley State University on Jan. 18. The Lady Wildcats (7-9, 5-2) defeated the Lady Lions (6-9, 4-2) 84-66. The Wildcats (11-5, 7-0) beat the Lions (7-8, 3-3) 72-64.

The first half was plagued by turnovers for the Lady Lions. The team turned the ball over 19 times in the first twenty minutes of play. Paine also began the game with a sluggish start offensively shooting only 29 percent from the field. At the half, Fort Valley led 40-28. After halftime, the Lady Lions still struggled holding onto the ball, making shots and defending the Lady Wildcats effectively.

Paine turned over the ball 30 times, the most for them this season. The Lady Wildcats turned those turnovers into 29 points. Fort Valley did not handle the ball much better as they turned it over 28 times. The Lady Lions only scored 16 points off of turnovers.

Ashley Watts led the Purple and White in scoring. Watts had 18 points, five assists and four rebounds. Senior Ariel Brown had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jemetria Fletcher added another 13 points and two rebounds for Paine. Tannasia Rhodes served as Paine’s leading rebounder. Rhodes pulled down eight rebounds including six defensive boards.

On the game, Paine shot 32 percent from the field, 31 percent from behind the arc and 59 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Wildcats shot 45 percent from the field, 35 percent from behind the arc and 61 percent from the line. Fort Valley’s Antionna Jefferson led the game in scoring with 19 points.

The Paine men’s basketball team got the game started with high energy and intensity pulling an early lead and holding on to it for the majority of the first half. After twenty minutes of play, Sean Morgan had ten points for Paine. The teams went into the locker room even in rebounding (22). In the second half, the Wildcats stepped their game up and quickly approached the lead and they grabbed their first lead of the half with 11:51 to play. Paine gained the lead back but only briefly. When Fort Valley regained the lead with 8:28 to play, they kept it for the remainder of the game.

Morgan ended as Paine’s leading scorer with 15 points and four rebounds. Kenny Fluellen contributed another 13 points and two rebounds. Senior Adrian Caldwell had seven assists to accompany his nine points. Paine’s leading rebounder was Toby Veal and he had six boards and six points.

The team shot 43 percent from the field, 38 percent from behind the arc and 50 percent from the free throw line. Fort Valley shot 39 percent from the field, 37 percent from behind the arc and 75 percent from the free throw line. The leading scorer for the Wildcats was Joshuah Davis (21) and their leading rebounder was Brandon Davey. Davey had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Paine plays at Albany State on Jan. 20. The Lady Lions will play at 2 p.m. and the Lions will play at 4 p.m.
