Pacers tied for 7th after 1st round at Kiawah

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The nationally fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken men’s golf team is tied for seventh after the first round of play at The Invitational at the Ocean Course at the par-72, 7,344-yard Ocean Course.

The tournament hosted by the College of Charleston is being held at the site of the 2012 PGA Championship.

USC Aiken carded a team score of 307 in round one. Georgia Southern and Stephen F. Austin both carded team scores of 307 as well in the first round.

Four Pacers are currently in the top-50 individually after the first round.

USC Aiken was led in the first round of action by JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) and Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C./Sumter HS). The duo both carded 76s in the first round of play to sit tied for 21st.

Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) closed out the first round with a 77. The 2012 First-Team All-American is tied for 28th entering the second round of action.

Andrew Ward (York, S.C./Clover HS) is the final Pacer in the top-50. The sophomore posted a 78 in round one. He is tied for 37th.

Defending tournament champion Florida is the team leader after the first round of action. The Gators carded a team score of 289 in the first round.

Houston’s Curtis Reed enters the second round in first individually after carding a 1-under 71 in the first round.

The second round of The Invitational at the Ocean Course is set to get underway at 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 10.
