AUGUSTA, Ga. – Re’mon Nelson became USC Aiken’s all-time assists leader and the Pacers claimed a 76-62 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State on Saturday evening at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory was USC Aiken’s first regular-season victory in Augusta since the 2001-02 season when the Pacers bested Augusta State, 65-61, on Feb. 23, 2002. USC Aiken is 5-0 at the Convocation Center against the Jaguars since the 2007-08 season.
USC Aiken (14-5, 10-2 PBC) with the victory over Augusta State (10-8, 5-6 PBC) now has a two-game lead over second-place UNC Pembroke (14-7, 7-4 PBC) and Armstrong Atlantic State (11-7, 7-4 PBC) in the Peach Belt Conference East Division.
The Pacers also now own the overall lead for the race for the Peach Belt Conference regular-season crown over Montevallo (14-6, 10-3 PBC) and Young Harris (14-5, 9-3 PBC).
Already the all-time leader in steals in Pacer history, Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) dished out eight assists to claim the all-time record in school history in the category. He now has 446 assists in his four-year Pacer career.
USC Aiken opened the game by scoring six of the first eight points. Augusta State would own its final lead of the game with just under 16 minutes to play in the opening stanza.
USC Aiken would hold a slight 20-19 advantage with 5:10 remaining in the first half.
The Pacers would then proceed to go on a 12-3 run to own a 32-22 lead with just over a minute left in the first half of action.
USC Aiken finished the first half shooting 48.1 percent (13-for-27) as a team. Augusta State shot 31 percent (9-for-29) in the first half as a team.
Paul Larsen (Mooresville, N.C./Mercer) led the Pacers in the first stanza with 12 points and five rebounds.
USC Aiken controlled most of the play over the opening minutes of the second half, owning a 52-40 advantage with 10:26 left in the game.
A little while later with under two minutes to play, USC Aiken had pushed its lead to as many as 21 points at 73-52 after a DeVontae Wright (Goose Creek, S.C /The Citadel) alley-oop to Santoine Butler (Augusta, Ga./Gardner-Webb).
USC Aiken finished the win over Augusta State shooting 46.2 percent (24-for-52) as a team. Augusta State shot just 37.3 percent (22-for-59) as a team in its loss to the Pacers. USC Aiken hit 33.3 percent (6-for-18) of its 3-point attempts, while Augusta State was only able to knock down 18.2 percent (2-for-11) of its 3-point attempts as a team.
Larsen led a trio of Pacers in double figures in the game with 21 points and nine rebounds. He was 7-for-9 from the field in the game.
Ronald Zimmerman (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley HS) ended the Pacer win with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Jesse Seilern (Innsbruck, Austria/Kapfenberg HS) closed the Pacer win with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
Ryan Weems led three Jaguars in double figures with 12 points.
Winners of five straight, USC Aiken will next travel to Greenwood, S.C. to face off against Peach Belt Conference foe Lander at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6.
