Last year feels like a missed opportunity for USC Aiken. The Pacers weren't supposed to dominate the Peach Belt, but they did, winning the regular season title.
Then, injuries cold shooting brought a quick end to the season in the first round of the playoffs.
Motivation...not an issue after that kind of finish.
USC Aiken has a mix of experience and fresh faces, and the older guys have spent the last few months pounding that championship attitude into the newbies.
Head Coach Vince Alexander expects only the best from his team, and they have a shot at it this year.
Senior guard Re'Mon Nelson said, "We've got a lot of motivation. We've got a lot of new guys coming in, and basically as a senior I want to go out with a bang. I want to win and teach the freshmen the culture here."
Alexander added, "We have a lot of work to do. This is a very tough conference, but I think our guys are up to the challenge of getting better and trying to be a team that can come back and contend to be conference champs."
The Pacers expect to shoot the lights out this season with Nelson, Jesse Seilern, Ron Zimmerman and company.
But the big guys face a big learning curve because veteran Mo Hubbard went down last week with a torn achilles.
Lucky for them, those shooters should ease the pressure early on.
"We're very excited," Nelson said. "We're looking to score 80 points per game. We've got Ron Zimmerman back and Jesse Seilern. Both are great shooters, and we bring in some bigs that also can shoot. They really stretch the defense so we should be exciting to see."
USC Aiken opens their season next Tuesday at home against Voorhees.
