Pacers offense overwhelms Chowan, 19-3

AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally eighth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team plated a season high 19 runs in a 19-3 non-conference victory over Chowan on Tuesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

USC Aiken (21-5, 9-3 PBC) pounded out 23 hits while holding Chowan (11-18) to only seven.

The Pacer offense came away with eight extra-base hits with Ty Barkell leading the charge. Barkell (Denver, Colo./Palmer Ridge HS) had three hits on the day, including a pair of doubles and his sixth home run of the season. Barkell has recorded a hit in the last 17 games for the Pacers.

J.J. Loker also had a pair of doubles in the game to go along with three RBIs and a run scored. In all, USC Aiken had eight batters record multiple hits with Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood HS) recording four; Barkell and Bryce Baur (Moncks Corner, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech) each had three hits. Branden Millhouse (Summerville, S.C./USC Upstate), Ryan Metzler (Glen Burnie, Md./Siena), Ben Donath (Aiken, S.C./Middle Georgia) and Sean Miller (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding HS) each came away with two hits in the game.

Only Evan Holton was able to secure multiple hits for Chowan with two.

Earning the win in relief for the Pacers was Zach Hayden (Martinez, Ga./Middle Georgia). Hayden (1-1) was able to pick up the win after spelling starter Jake Padgett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) in the top of the fifth inning. Hayden pitched two innings and struck out three in the Pacer victory. In all, five Pacers pitched in the game.

Earning the loss for Chowan was Tyler Burden. Burden (1-1) gave up 15 runs in just over three innings for the Hawks.

The Pacers and Hawks will finish their two-game nonconference series with a single game on Wednesday, March 20 at 6 p.m. at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
