Pacers drop 100 on Francis Marion

AIKEN, S.C. – For the second time this season, the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team posted 100 or more points in a game in a 100-82 Peach Belt Conference victory over Francis Marion on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.

USC Aiken (12-5, 8-2 PBC) has now claimed four straight wins over Francis Marion (6-9, 2-7 PBC). The Pacers are 2-0 against the Patriots this season as they also claimed a 108-79 victory over Francis Marion on Dec. 17 in Florence, S.C.

The Pacers with the victory now have sole possession of first place in the Peach Belt Conference East Division.

The contest was close in the first half with USC Aiken taking a narrow 42-41 lead into the halftime break. The first half was a 3-pointer bonanza with the two teams combining to hit 17 of the 31 field goals in the opening half from beyond the arc.

USC Aiken opened the second half on a 28-11 run over the course of the first nine and a half minutes to place the game out of reach for Francis Marion.

The Pacers would eventually go on to outscore the Patriots, 58-41, in the second stanza en route to their 18-point victory.

USC Aiken closed out the win over Francis Marion shooting 56.7 percent (34-for-60) as a team. Francis Marion shot 29-for-63 (46 percent) from the field in its loss to the Pacers.

The Pacers knocked down 14 3-pointers in the game. They shot 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from beyond the arc. Francis Marion shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from beyond the arc in the game.

USC Aiken shot 78.3 percent (18-for-23) from the free throw line in the game. Francis Marion connected on 10 of its 11 (90.9 percent) of its free throw attempts in the contest.

Five Pacers finished in double figures in the game with Jesse Seilern (Innsbruck, Austria/Kapfenberg HS) leading the way with a career-high tying and game-high tying 21 points. Seilern also had five rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in the game.

Ronald Zimmerman (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley HS) nailed six 3-pointers in claiming 18 points in the Pacer win.

On a night in which he was honored for becoming the 10th player to score over 1,000 points in USC Aiken’s NCAA Division II history, Re’mon Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) finished with 17 points, six assists and six rebounds.

The six dimes in the game by Nelson moved him to within nine of becoming USC Aiken’s all-time leader in assists. Already USC Aiken’s all-time leader in steals, Nelson now has 431 assists in his career.

USC Aiken’s Kinley Branch (Stone Mountain, Ga./Arkansas State) was 6-for-9 from the floor in claiming 16 points.

The final Pacer in double figures was DeVontae Wright (Goose Creek, S.C./The Citadel), who tied his Pacer career high with 15 points. He just missed on a double-double as he also had a Pacer career-best nine assists.

Dustin Jones and Evrik Gary both led Francis Marion in its loss with a game-high tying 21 points each.

USC Aiken has now won 24 of his last 25 regular-season home games.

The Pacers will next play host to league foe Flagler at the Convocation Center on Thursday, Jan. 31. Tip-off in the contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
