Pacers baseball picks up another top 10 preseason ranking

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team has been tabbed at the No. 8 position in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) preseason poll, which was released this week.

The Pacers, coming off a 42-13 season, are tied for eighth in the preseason poll after garnering 227 total points. USC Aiken is tied with Chico State (Calif.) for the eighth spot.

Head coach Kenny Thomas’ team is the highest-rated squad in the Peach Belt Conference. UNC Pembroke (17th) was the only other squad from the league in the preseason poll.

USC Aiken is No. 2 in the preseason poll for 2014 and is No. 14 in the preseason Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in its preseason rankings.

The NCBWA has the Pacers second in the initial regional poll just behind Mount Olive, which was tabbed No. 4 in the national poll. In the region, the Trojans had 103 total points while USC Aiken had 102.

The organization also named Derek Beasley to the all-Southeast Region team. The 6-0 senior left-handed hurler was selected to the all-Southeast Region team by ABCA, NCBWA and Daktronics as a junior. Beasley earned first-team all-conference honors and was tabbed PBC Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 8, 2013.
