Novak declared champion in South Carolina amatuer

Pawleys Island, SC – Due to unplayable course conditions, the 83rd edition of the SCGA Amateur Championship has been reduced to a 54 hole event and Andrew Novak has been declared the 2014 Champion.

After 1.25 inches of rain over night and a total of almost four inches over the last three days, The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island took as much as it could handle. With unpassable fairways, ponds in the bunkers and overall saturated conditions, play was not possible within the hours needed to complete the final round. This is only the second time in the 83 year history of the event that the Championship has been reduced to 54 holes.

With a final score of eight under par 215, Andrew Novak of Mount Pleasant has been officially crowned winner of the 2014 SCGA Amateur Championship. After an opening score of 65, the Wofford College golfer proved too hard to catch as he led wire to wire to win his first SCGA Championship. A former winner of the SC Junior Golf Association’s Beth Daniel Junior Azalea, the 19 year old Novak said “it feels good to win…it’s a big accomplishment to win the State Amateur.”

Aiken's Ryan Carpenter finished tied for eighth with Florence's Jon Weiss.
