North Augusta, SC--Nine years ago, no one could have known where North Augusta's high school swim team was headed. It was formed from scratch with big goals and that was about it. Now, a lot of those dreams are a reality
The swimming Yellow Jackets went to state last weekend and brought home five individual titles, the first time the program has ever had multiple winners. The significance wasn't lost on the winners either. They may not have been on the team that long ago, but they know how big the accomplishment is.
"Just to look up at the board and realize that all your hard work had been enough and that you achieved what you wanted to achieve and that everybody for years after this was going to remember me for what I had done, it's huge."
"I think that it kind of put us on the map a little more because it's usually just been a couple teams at state, but with this it really shows that there's another team out there that could do well."
One of the important parts about this group, there aren't any rivalries. It's a tight knit team from top to bottom, so when one person does well, everyone else tries to feed off their success
"We're kind of like one big family. We practice together everyday, and we're all really close. So, I mean, especially at State, it's a smaller group than the whole team so we're going up there together, we sit together, and when one person does good, everybody gets excited."
There's definitely plenty of opportunities for more success next year. Nicole Fuller and Kelsey williams both have a year of high school still to come.
