No. 6 Pacers lose series at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In a battle of top-30 teams, the nationally 28th-ranked Montevallo Falcons claimed a 6-1 game three Peach Belt Conference victory over No. 6 USC Aiken at Kermit A. Johnson Field on Saturday afternoon.

Montevallo (23-12, 13-8 PBC) plated the first six runs of the game with USC Aiken (27-7, 13-5 PBC) obtaining its lone run of the game in the top of the ninth inning.

Montevallo out-hit USC Aiken, 12-4, in the game.

Falcon starter Josh Clemen pitched a complete game for Montevallo, striking out seven in his nine innings on the hill. Clemen is now 4-2 on the year.

USC Aiken starter Wyatt Brown (Suwanee, Ga./Middle Georgia) took the loss on the hill for the Pacers. Brown dealt 6.1 innings, striking out five.

No Pacer finished with multiple hits in the game with Bryce Baur (Moncks Corner, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech), Ryan Metzler (Glen Burnie, Md./Siena), Grayson Smith (Aiken, S.C./Mercer) and Sean Miller (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding HS) each recording a hit. Miller, who doubled in the game, has now hit in 14 straight games.

USC Aiken’s Bill Gerstenslager (Solon, Ohio/Mercyhurst) was held hitless in the game, ending his 20-game hitting streak.

Austin Dubberly led the Falcons with three hits.

The Pacers will next travel to Gaffney, S.C. for a 3 p.m. non-conference game against Limestone on Wednesday, April 3. It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season with USC Aiken taking a 10-6 victory over Limestone at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Wednesday, March 13.
