AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Shepherd with a 5-1 win over the Rams on Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
The series win by USC Aiken (8-1) over Shepherd (0-3) leaves USC Aiken having swept two of its three-game series this season (Lincoln Memorial and Shepherd). The Pacers have claimed all three of their series in the young 2013 season as they also took two of three from Carson-Newman.
USC Aiken’s eight wins in the 2013 season thus far allow 14th-year head coach Kenny Thomas to sit just five victories away from 1,000 in his career.
The Pacers closed out their win over Shepherd on Sunday out-hitting the Rams, 10-5.
Two Pacers acquired multiple hits in the contest with Bryce Baur (Moncks Corner, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech) and Sean Miller (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding HS) both claiming two hits each.
Baur was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Dylan Garten was the only Ram with multiple hits. He ended Shepherd’s loss with two hits and one run scored.
USC Aiken did most of its damage in the contest in the bottom of the second and third innings.
The first Pacer run on the day came in the bottom of the second when Miller singled in Ryan Metzler (Glen Burnie, Md./Siena), who had singled to left field to get things going for USC Aiken in the inning. USC Aiken would then post three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-0 advantage.
The final Pacer run in the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Ben Donath (Aiken, S.C./Middle Georgia) doubled in Baur.
Five Pacer pitchers saw the mound in the game with Wyatt Brown (Suwanee, Ga./Middle Georgia) claiming his second win of the year on the hill. Brown (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings, fanning six and allowing just two hits.
Taylor Grover (North Augusta, S.C./Midland Valley HS) claimed the final two outs in the game for USC Aiken to obtain his third save of the year.
Shepherd starter Davis Hall (0-1) suffered the loss in the contest. He allowed four Pacer runs in his four innings on the mound.
USC Aiken will next open its 2013 Peach Belt Conference schedule by welcoming league rival Francis Marion to the ‘Bert for a three-game series. The three-game league set will commence with a 4 p.m. contest on Friday, Feb. 22. The series will close with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23. The first game of the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
