No. 3 USC Aiken baseball ends season against Georgia College

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The nationally third-ranked/regionally second-seeded University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team concluded a tremendous 2013 campaign with a 9-2 loss to 25th-ranked/regionally fifth-seeded Georgia College in an elimination game in the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field.

USC Aiken closed out the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with a 1-2 record. The Pacers had opened the regional on Thursday, May 16 with a thrilling 11-7 win over Georgia College.

USC Aiken with Saturday’s loss to Georgia College closes its 2013 season with a 42-13 overall record. USC Aiken was ranked as high as No. 1 nationally during the 2013 season.

USC Aiken with its 42 wins in 2013 has now picked up 40 or more wins in a season eight times (1992, 1993, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013) since its first season in the Peach Belt Conference in 1992.

USC Aiken made its eighth trip to the NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament (1992, 1993, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013) in the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

The Peach Belt Conference regular-season champion Pacers closed out the regular-season with a 41-9 overall record. The Pacers were 24-6 in league play in the 2013 regular-season.

The 2013 Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship was the second for USC Aiken in the last five years. The Pacers also obtained the league regular-season title in 2009.

The Pacers have three regular-season championships in school history now as they also acquired the 1994 regular-season title. USC Aiken has two Peach Belt Conference Tournament championships (1992 and 1993) in its history.

USC Aiken's regular-season-closing three-game sweep of Georgia Southwestern left the Pacers having claimed 11 of its 13 three-game series in the 2013 regular-season (Lincoln Memorial, Carson-Newman, Shepherd, Francis Marion, Flagler, Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta State, Lander, Columbus State and Georgia Southwestern).

The Pacers swept three-game series from Lincoln Memorial, Shepherd, Flagler, Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta State, Lander and Georgia Southwestern.

Georgia College (35-18) led from start-to-finish in its win over the Pacers on Saturday.

The Bobcats owned a 3-0 advantage entering the bottom of the fourth inning.

USC Aiken scored its lone two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Ty Barkell (Denver, Colo./Palmer Ridge HS) blasted a two-run home run down the left field line to cut the Bobcat lead to 3-2.

The Pacers would unfortunately not be able to get any closer with the Bobcats scoring the next six runs in their 9-2 victory.

Georgia College out-hit USC Aiken, 15-9, in the game.

Bill Gerstenslager (Solon, Ohio/Mercyhurst) and Barkell led the Pacers in the game with two hits each. Gerstenslager was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the game, while Barkell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.

Six Georgia College players had two hits each in the game.

USC Aiken starter Wyatt Brown (Suwanee, Ga./Middle Georgia) suffered the loss on the hill in the game. Brown (6-5) pitched the first 2.2 innings of the game before giving way to Zach Hayden, who pitched the next 3.2 innings. Hayden (Martinez, Ga./Middle Georgia) fanned six before USC Aiken used the services of three more pitchers the rest of the way.

Georgia College starter Matt LaMothe pitched the first eight innings in acquiring the win. He is now 9-4 on the year.
