No. 24 Lady Jags roll on the road, 78-56

AMERICUS, Ga. – Augusta State junior guard Tanchelle Hollingsworth tallied a season-high 20 points Saturday afternoon to spark the Lady Jaguars to a 78-56 Peach Belt Conference victory at Georgia Southwestern in the Storm Dome.

The contest marked the end of a three-game road swing for the No. 24 Lady Jags, who improved to 17-5 on the season and 10-5 in the conference. The 17 overall and 10 conference wins each represent the most for the ASU Women’s Basketball program since the 2007-08 season.

Hollingsworth connected on 7-of-11 field-goal attempts and added six rebounds and four assists. Senior Tiffany Jaecks logged her second double-double of the season with 14 points and game-high 10 rebounds, while junior Becky Newhouse netted 14 points and senior Taylor Ayers booked 10 points and four blocks off the bench.

Jasmine McSwain paced the Lady ‘Canes (3-21, 1-16 PBC) with 18 points and Danisha Green had 14 points.

The Lady Jags connected on 15 of their first 17 shot attempts (88.2 percent) and led 37-20 after an Ayers’ layup at the 6:24 mark. GSW countered, scoring 10 straight points to pull within 37-30 on a McSwain jumper with 3:15 left. Jaecks slowed the Lady ‘Canes momentum with a 3-pointer and Laci Schreiber’s layup gave ASU a 42-33 lead at the half.

ASU’s 42 points marked the second-highest point total in a first half this season. Hollingsworth led the way, connecting on 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 14 points with four assists.

Ten different players scored for the Lady Jags, who grabbed their largest lead at 76-50 on a pair of Hollingsworth free throws with 1:13 remaining. ASU shot an even 50.0 percent, the squad’s second-best effort of the season, and owned the edge in rebounds, 45-27.

The Lady Jags host Lander in a Peach Belt Conference matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
