May 4, 2014 AUGUSTA, Ga. –The fifth-seeded GRU Augusta Jaguars broke seed in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional with a 5-2 victory over the fourth-seeded Georgia College Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at Bacon Park in Savannah, Ga.
The Jaguars (19-6) advance to the final on Monday, April 5th to take on the No. 1 Armstrong Pirates (16-6) at 2:00 p.m. in Savannah. The tournament-hosting Pirates are coming off a 5-0 win over USC Aiken in their first round of play.
The Jaguars’ No. 16 duo of Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes outlasted the Bobcats in the first doubles meeting – taking an 8-6 victory over Yannick Hass and Alex Schubert. Romain Brunie and teammate Romani Ferreria shined for GRU at number two doubles with an 8-6 win, before Maxime Coulomb and Joao Gabriel Freitas rounded out the third GRU victory with an 8-4 score.
GRU went down 2-0 in singles play after GC’s No. 22 Yannick Hass defeated Victor Cabellos and Alex Schubert downed Romain Ferreria. Down by two sets, the Jags got two wins when Roman Brunie won a three-set series over Anton Waern. Victor Guimaraes in the number four singles slot came up with back-to-back 6-4 wins to give the Jaguars the boost they needed to prevail 5-2 in the match.
