AIKEN, S.C. – Re’mon Nelson finished with a double-double with 23 points and 11 assists in leading the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team to an 82-77 Peach Belt Conference victory over Montevallo on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
The victory allowed the Pacers to remain tied with Augusta State for first place in the Peach Belt Conference East Division. Both USC Aiken (8-4, 4-1 PBC) and Augusta State are currently 4-1 in league play.
The East Division duo of USC Aiken and Augusta State are also now tied with Young Harris for the overall lead in the Peach Belt Conference. Young Harris is currently leading the West Division with a 4-1 league mark.
The Pacers opened the win over Montevallo (8-5, 4-2 PBC) on a 6-0 run. The two teams would then play back and forth for most of the first half with the game tied at 28-all with 5:16 to play in the first half.
USC Aiken would then close the half on an 8-1 run to own a 36-29 halftime advantage.
The Pacers would lead by as many as nine in early minutes of the second half, but Montevallo would hold a slight one-point lead at 50-49 with 11:09 remaining in the contest.
USC Aiken would take the lead back on its next offensive possession and never look back from there in its eventual five-point victory.
Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) was 8-of-9 from the field in the Pacer win. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Nelson’s 11 assists in the contest were just one away from tying his career-best in the category. The 11 assists were also just two assists away from tying the all-time single-game record in program history.
Nelson now has 401 assists in his Pacer career. He is just 39 assists away from breaking the all-time school record, which is currently held by Eric Dugans (1999-2003) at 439.
USC Aiken had a total of four players in double figures with Santoine Butler (Augusta, Ga./Gardner-Webb) finishing just behind Nelson with 21 points.
Butler also had seven blocks, five rebounds and one steal. He was 9-for-14 from the floor in the game.
Jesse Seilern (Innsbruck, Austria/Kapfenberg HS) closed out the Pacer win with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Kinley Branch (Stone Mountain, Ga./Arkansas State) was the final Pacer in double figures, coming off the bench to end his evening with 10 points for the Pacers.
Paul Larsen (Mooresville, N.C./Mercer) just missed on a double-double of his own in the game with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Troran Brown led Montevallo in the contest with a game-high 28 points. He was one of four Falcons in double figures.
USC Aiken closed out its victory shooting a scorching 60.4 percent (29-for-48) from the field as a team. The Pacers knocked down 50 percent (7-for-14) of their 3-point attempts as a team.
USC Aiken hit 73.9 percent (17-for-23) of its free throw attempts as a team in the game.
Montevallo closed out its loss to USC Aiken shooting 43.9 percent (29-for-66) as a team. The Falcons could only connect on 36.4 percent (8-for-22) of their 3-point attempts in the game.
Montevallo shot 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from the free throw line as a team in the game.
USC Aiken will next welcome Clayton State to the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The game between Peach Belt Conference rivals is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
USC Aiken enters the game having now won 21 of its last 22 regular-season home games.
