Mercer must get 'up to speed' on SoCon

June 13, 2014 MACON, GA-- Never too early to talk more football. The talk around the Mercer football program is the big step up in competition.

The Bears had an impressive inaugural season. This year, they have to get up to speed on the Southern Conference.

Coach Bobby Lamb has coined the term "SoCon speed". Everything about their new conference will be a new challenge for Mercer. The Bears must get faster and stronger to compete in a faster football league.

This first season is the perfect opportunity for Coach Lamb's crew to size up the competition.

"We know it's going to be a tremendous challenge. However, I think with what happened last year. We have a lot of confidence going into the season. We're excited about getting going. Really, it's a measuring stick season for us, to see how we measure up against the Southern Conference," Coach Lamb said.

Mercer is essentially filling the role of Georgia Southern in the SoCon. Albeit against lesser teams, the Bears won ten games in the Pioneer League last season. Mercer opens their SoCon conference slate with Furman University.
