Every year, seven rounds worth of football players get a phone call that they've been drafted into the NFL. That leaves plenty of disappointed guys on the outside looking in, but that feeling usually doesn't last long.

Consider former Laney stand out Brandon Thurmond.

The Arkansas Pine Bluff defensive end didn't hear his name called when the draft ended Saturday night, but less than five minutes later Thurmond was an Atlanta Falcon.

Undrafted free agents make up a large part of the players who report to NFL training camps each year, and even though Thurmond was disappointed he wasn't drafted, he's not worried about it anymore.

"It's a nice feeling," he said. "I've always been dreaming about this since I was four-years-old. I've always told my mother that I'm going to be able to support her, and now I have the opportunity to do this by signing as a free agent. I just have to go in there and earn my spot, and I'm going to make it happen for my mother and my family."

Two other guys from the area had their phones light up Saturday night after the draft ended. Thomson and Georgia Southern product Darius Eubanks is getting a shot with the Vikings, and Strom Thurmond's Jakar Hamilton is headed to Dallas.
