Lady Pacers fall at home

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team lost a 65-59 decision to Southern Poly Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest.

The Pacers are now 2-6 on the season.

Leading the way for head coach Mike Brandt’s team was Mackenzie Reese, who accounted for a team-best 14 points in addition to pulling down a squad-high five rebounds. Porsha Martin contributed 11 markers. Amaura Brandt and Kate Duff each hit for nine points. Brandt grabbed five boards while Duff snagged four to go along with a team-high four assists. Duff was also credited with a career-high and game-best six steals.

For the game, the Pacers connected on 21-of-49 shots from the floor (42.9 percent), including a five-of-14 effort (35.7 percent) from the three-point stripe. USC Aiken buried 12-of-15 charity shots (80 percent).

The Pacers maintained a 19-9 edge in bench points, but the Hornets led the way with 30 points in the paint compared to 16 by the home squad.

After the visitors jumped out to a 12-5 lead, Coach Brandt’s team battled back, knotting the contest at 16 on a three-point shot by Amaura Brandt. The shot was in the midst of an 8-0 run by the Pacers. At the 8:04 mark, Brandt connected on another shot from downtown for a 19-16 lead.

USC Aiken extended the lead six at 27-21 on a foul shot by Mariah Durian with 17 ticks remaining in the half.

The visitors trimmed the lead in the second period and tied it with 14:14 remaining in the game.

After Southern Poly took a nine-point lead with 9:27 to go, USC Aiken fought back. Tiffany Addison buried a pair of free throws and Martin’s lay-up pulled the home team within two at 52-50.
