MORROW, Ga. – The regionally fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team had its 2013 season come to a close in its 83-66 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional semifinal loss to national No. 1 Clayton State.
The regional semifinal loss concludes another impressive season by USC Aiken (22-8) that saw the Pacers claim their sixth 20 or more win season in the last seven years.
The Pacers have acquired an NCAA Tournament victory in each of the last three years.
The game began with the two squads playing extremely close for the first five minutes of the game with the contest tied 12-12 with 15:13 to play in the opening half.
Clayton State (31-0) from there would pull away for a 44-30 lead at the halftime break.
The Pacers ended the first half shooting 34.6 percent (9-of-26) as a team. The Pacers shot 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the free throw line in the first half.
Clayton State shot 47.1 percent (16-for-34) from the field in the first half. The Lakers missed just one free throw (8-of-9) in the first half.
USC Aiken’s Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) led all players in the first half with 15 points. Clayton State’s Kayla Mobley led the Lakers with 10 points at intermission.
In the second half the Pacers would continue to battle, but their efforts would fall just short.
In her final game as a Pacer, Tarailo collected a game-best 29 points. She was a perfect 15-of-15 from the free throw line in the game. The senior guard also had four rebounds and one steal.
A 2013 Peach Belt Conference First-Team All-Conference choice, Tarailo concludes her Pacer career in the top-10 in school history for total points with 1,169 career points. She is also in the top-10 in USC Aiken’s NCAA Division II history in 3-pointers made (216), games played (119) and minutes played (2,894).
Fellow senior Mia Antoine (Stone Mountain, Ga./Dominion Christian HS) was the other Pacer in double figures. The senior guard ended her final game in a Pacer uniform with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Peach Belt Conference Elite 15 Award winner finishes her Pacer career in the top-10 all-time for games played (116).
Pacer senior Tiffani Moody (Raleigh, N.C./Ohio Valley University) concluded her career with a team-best seven rebounds to go along with eight points. She also had two blocks to finish her career holding firmly fourth all-time in USC Aiken women’s basketball history with 108 career blocks.
Four Lakers ended their efforts in double figures with Kayla Mobley leading the way with a game-high 26 points.
USC Aiken as a team closed out its loss shooting 35.2 percent (19-for-54) as a team. The Pacers shot 86.2 percent (25-for-29) from the free throw line in the game as a team.
Clayton State shot 52.6 percent (30-for-57) as a team in its win over the Pacers. They hit 89.5 percent (17-for-19) of their free throw attempts as a team.
