Lady Jaguars golf wrap up season at NCAA Regional

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State's Natalie Wille and Casey Kennedy closed out their 2012-13 seasons Saturday with the conclusion of the third and final round of the NCAA East Regional at Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala.

Playing as individuals, Wille registered a 1-under 71 in her last collegiate round and improved 30 spots in the 126-player field. She notched three birdies on the day and finished in a tie for 44th at 7-over 223 (79-73-71). She stood 95th after the opening round and 74th following Friday's second round. Kennedy began the day tied for 22nd and finished in a tie for 24th at 1-over 217 (75-70-72) following her round of even-par 72.

Second-ranked Alabama claimed a wire-to-wire victory, cruising to the team title by eight strokes over No. 20 Tulane. Fifth-ranked Arkansas tied with No. 17 Oklahoma State for third and No. 23 Texas took fifth. Northwestern, UCLA and regional host Auburn were sixth through eighth and each advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Bama's Stephanie Meadow managed a 3-under 69 and posted a six-shot victory over Princeton's Kelly Shon. Tulane's Madison Opfer was third, while the Crimson Tide's Emma Talley and Jennifer Kirby, along with Tulane's Emily Pentilla, tied for fourth. Shon earned the No. 1 individual spot to the NCAA Championships and Tennessee's Erica Popson defeated teammate Chessey Thomas and North Carolina's Jackie Chang in a sudden-death playoff for second individual spot.

A senior from Balsta, Sweden, Wille (pronounced VEE-luh) registered one of the top seasons in the Lady Jaguars' 12-year history. Wille paced the squad in stroke average (74.0) and in nine events, she posted eight top-20 finishes and six top-10's and five top-5's. In five spring events, her worst finish was a tie for the 13th in the Lady Buckeye Invitational.

Kennedy, a junior from Cape May, N.J., ranked second on the squad in stroke average (74.68). She notched eight top-25 finishes in 10 events, including seven top 20's, three top 10's and two top-5's. She won medalist honors at the Purdue Mount Vintage Invitational and carded a career-best, 5-under 67 in opening round of UCF Challenge. In five spring events, her worst finish was a tie for 25th in the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate. Kennedy was ranked 83rd in the nation.

The NCAA Championships are slated for May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
