TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Augusta State opened the 2012-13 regular season Saturday night with a 78-63 non-conference road win over North Greenville at Hayes Gymnasium.
Junior forward Jemimah Ashby paced the Lady Jaguars (1-0) with 24 points and senior guard Brittany White registered 15 points, nine steals, six rebounds and six assists. Junior Brooke McCants pitched in nine points and six boards, senior Taylor Ayers notched eight points and nine boards and senior Eryka Menzies added seven points.
With the victory, ASU improved to 2-1 in season openers under third-year head coach Nate Teymer.
The Lady Jags jumped ahead 8-2 in the first 3:36 of the contest before the Crusaders countered with 12 straight points to move in front 14-8. A jumper from Ayers forced a 14-all tie before NGU scored five straight. An Ashby jumper at the 5:32 mark of the first half pulled ASU even at 20-all and the Lady Jags outscored NGU 15-7 over the final 3:31 for a 37-29 halftime advantage.
Augusta led by as much as 12 following an Ashby free throw 4:23 into the second half. The Crusaders closed within three of the lead with 5:58 remaining before the Lady Jags rattled off a 9-0 spurt in a span of 2:25 to pull away.
ASU, which shot 42.9 percent overall, owned the rebounding edge, 44-40 and forced 36 turnovers.
The Lady Jags return to action on Thursday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Carrollton, Ga., to take on West Georgia at 7:00 p.m., in The Coliseum on the UWG campus.
