YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Tanchelle Hollingsworth led four players in double figures Saturday afternoon as the 23rd-ranked Lady Jaguars registered a 56-50 Peach Belt Conference road win over Young Harris in YHC Basketball Arena.
The contest was the first of three straight road games for the Lady Jags and marked the first-ever meeting between ASU and YHC. The Mountain Lions are competing in their inaugural season as a member of the PBC.
With the victory, ASU improved to 16-4 on the season and 9-4 in the conference. The Mountain Lions slipped to 12-9 overall and 6-8 in the league.
The Lady Jaguars canned a season-best nine 3-pointers, including three each from Hollingsworth and senior guard Brittany White. Hollingsworth paced ASU in scoring for the third straight game with 13 points. White booked 11 points, five assists and two steals while Taylor Ayers notched 10 points and eight rebounds. Becky Newhouse turned in 10 points and seven rebounds and Tiffany Jaecks snagged a team-high 10 rebounds.
Peyton Robertson booked a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Mountain Lions. Breanna Gleeson chipped in 10 points and Lauren Smith dished out six assists.
ASU never trailed and led by as many as 16 early in the second half. Young Harris closed within seven before the Lady Jags countered with eight straight points to push their advantage back to 15 midway with 10:22 left. Hollingsworth hit a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left put ASU in front by 10 before two late Lions’ layups accounted for the final margin.
The Lady Jags take on Columbus State on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m., from the Lumpkin Center in Columbus, Ga.
