AUGUSTA, Ga. – Head coach Nate Teymer’s tear continued on Saturday night as he progressed his Augusta State Lady Jaguars to their best start in program history with a 57-40 win over UNC Pembroke in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Senior forward Tiffany Jaecks scored 14, while senior Laci Schreiber notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead ASU to victory on the fourth-annual Military Appreciation Day.
Avenging the Jan. 5 loss at UNCP, the win moved ASU to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the Peach Belt Conference. The loss dropped the Braves to 9-10 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Jaecks scored the first five points for ASU, leading to an 8-0 run where the Lady Jags held the Braves to 16 percent shooting in the first half. The Braves hit only one of their first 12 shots and committed 12 turnovers in the half.
ASU held the Braves to 10 points for the fewest the Lady Jags have allowed in a half this year. Junior Becky Newhouse was perfect going into the break, shooting 2-2 from the field and hitting a lone 3-pointer with five rebounds.
Jaecks led all scorers with 14 points, while Newhouse was a basket shy of getting her first double-double on the season, contributing eight points and 10 boards. Brittany White handed out a game-high eight assists and added three steals.
The Braves were paced by 12 points from sophomore guard Kamille Horne and senior Taylor Gallentine’s 10 rebounds.
The Lady Jags built a 22-point lead in the second half, while the Braves could draw no closer than 13. ASU ended the game 57-40, shooting 35 percent (23-65) for the game and holding the Braves to 27 percent (14-52). The Lady Jags forced 19 turnovers and scored 15 points of off UNCP mistakes.
The win starts an eleven-game PBC stretch to close out ASU’s regular season. The Lady Jags continue conference play on Thursday, Jan. 31 when Armstrong Atlantic State hosts ASU in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
