Lady Jags edge Lander, 58-53

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Augusta State improved to 6-0 for the first time in 16 years Saturday afternoon with a 58-53 Peach Belt Conference road win at Lander in Horne Arena.

With the victory, the Lady Jaguars (6-0, 1-0 PBC) snapped an eight-game losing streak to Lander. Previously, ASU’s last win over Lander was a 71-66 victory on Feb. 13, 2008 (also in Greenwood). ASU’s last 6-0 start occurred during the 1996-97 season.

Junior point guard Tanchelle Hollingsworth drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 14 seconds left to give the Lady Jags a 56-51 lead. Lander’s Jamie Shaw hit a pair of free throws before Hollingsworth drained a pair of her own with three seconds left for the final margin.

Hollingsworth paced ASU with 16 points and senior Taylor Ayers just missed her second double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Brittany White logged six assists, six rebounds and four steals and junior Jemimah Ashby grabbed eight rebounds.

Lea Saunders tallied a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for Lander (1-4, 0-1 PBC). Precious Elkins booked 13 points and 14 rebounds while Shaw posted 11 boards of her won.

The Lady Jags led 44-31 with 10:38 left after a Tiffany Jaecks’ jumper. Lander then reeled off a 14-3 run and closed to within two of the lead on two occasions. Elkins canned a pair of free throws at the 5:49 mark to pull LU within 47-45 and Saunders swished a trey from the right baseline with 36 seconds left to cut ASU’s advantage to 53-51. After a timeout, Hollingsworth got open on the right wing and her fallaway 3-pointer with :14 left put the Lady Jags up by five.

Despite a 0-for-8 start from the field, ASU led by as many as 18 in the first half when an Ayers’ layup capped a 6-0 spurt and put the Lady Jags up 32-14 at the 3:58 mark. Lander scored the final seven points of the half and trailed 34-21 at the break.

ASU shot just 28.2 percent from the field, compared to only 24.6 percent for Lander. The Lady Jags forced went 14-of-17 at the charity stripe and forced 22 turnovers.

The Lady Jags are back in action on Monday, Dec. 10 when they host Clark-Atlanta at 6:00 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
