PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Augusta State endured its worst shooting effort of the season Saturday and fell 47-40 at UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt Conference action at English E. Jones Center.
With the loss, the Lady Jaguars dropped to 8-2 overall and to 2-2 in the PBC. The victory was the first in PBC play for UNCP (1-3), which improved to 7-6 overall.
The Lady Jags played without Jemimah Ashy, the team’s leading scorer at 13.8 ppg., who was sidelined with a left knee injury.
Taylor Ayers had a team-high 11 points and was the only Lady Jags to reach double figures. Tanchelle Hollingsworth had nine points and two steals, while Becky Newhouse led the squad with nine rebounds and three assists.
Jazmine Kemp paced Pembroke with 13 points and Amelia Partin managed 10. Kierra Haney grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and Kemp added eight boards.
ASU shot just 21.2 percent in the opening half, including just 2-of-16 from 3-point range. The Lady Jags led 9-6 at the first media timeout but connected on only four field goals over the final 14:57 of the half. ASU made two of its first five 3-point attempts but misfired on the last 14 shots from long range.
UNCP led by as much as 11 in the second half despite shooting just 22.2 percent from the field. ASU made one final charge, putting together a 9-0 run over a span of 5:29 that Ayers capped with a jumper at the 5:00 mark. Her basket cut the Lady Jags’ deficit to 36-35, but ASU managed only two field goals the rest of the way as UNCP closed the game on a 11-5 spurt.
ASU shot a season-low 22.6 percent overall and hit only 4-of-29 attempts from 3-point range (13.8 percent). The Lady Jags set a new season low with only eight turnovers.
The Lady Jags are back in action next weekend when they welcome Armstrong Atlantic State to Christenberry Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
