Knoxville takes it to the RiverHawks with a 7-2 win

Knoxville, TN--For the first of a three-game weekend road trip, the RiverHawks started things off with the Ice Bears Friday night.

The Knoxville Ice Bears had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 7-2 win over the Augusta RiverHawks.

Knoxville got the win thanks to a great game by Tyler Fernandez, who had two goals and two assists. Fernandez scored the first of his two goals at 2:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Knoxville. Shaun Arvai assisted on the tally. Fernandez's next tally made the score 6-2 Knoxville with 9:16 left in the third period. Eric Satim picked up the assist.

The Ice Bears were often in penalty trouble, totaling four minors and four majors for 28 minutes in penalty time. Knoxville surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Ice Bears stifled Augusta's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Knoxville bested its season scoring average. The Ice Bears average 3.2 goals per game. Knoxville's offense was clicking better than usual and put 48 shots on goal during the game, better than the 27.6 shots per game it averages.

Knoxville also got points from Jeremy Klaver, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Matt Pierce, who also registered one goal and one assist. Brett Valliquette also scored for Knoxville.

The RiverHawks racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and four majors for 70 minutes in penalty time. Augusta had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. With 24 shots on target during the contest, the RiverHawks exceeded the 16.5 shots they average per game this year.

Augusta was helped by Matt Auffrey, who tallied one goal. Auffrey scored 18:25 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Augusta also got a goal from Taylor McReynolds as well. Other players who recorded assists for Augusta were Kyle Watson and Dennis Sicard, who each chipped in one.

Connor Toomey recorded 22 saves for the Ice Bears. Knoxville registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. Robbie Moss took the loss and made 23 saves before being replaced by Austin Lee who made 18 saves. The RiverHawks registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. Augusta ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Sicard was ejected from the game.
