Wrens, Ga--Jefferson County is one team that will have their hands full as they move up from class 2-A to 3-A. The Warriors are now the second smallest school. You couldn't tell by looking on the field.
Once again over 100 kids are part of the Warrior program so you won't find a single player having to play on both sides of the ball. J.B. Arnold has built a winner in Wrens with a team that's gone to the playoffs 11 straight years. Like some of the elite programs around, despite losing big names, they have others ready to fill the void. This year, it'll all start on defense for Jefferson County
"Our defense, our defense. They're fast, they get after you, and they're strong" said senior Nigel Mathis
"I'll be the first one to tell you defense wins championships" said coach JB Arnold "No matter what anybody says if you got a good defense you can play anybody at any time. Our defense is way above our offense right now."
With the new class comes a new region and some tough opponents. Now they'll be playing the likes of Washington County and Thomson in their quest for the post season. They'll rely on some of that tradtion and a tough non region slate to get them prepared for their playoff chase.
"The tradtion has been here ever since Barry (Bostic) has been here." said Damian Farmer "I mean we have to keep it up, we don't want to turn it down. We got to keep turning it up and keep rolling. "Barry was a good player, Dontavious (Kitchens) was a good player but we got to strengthen up and we got to go."
"You can play a Washington County, a Thomson, those are good ballgames around here that people want to see" said coach Arnold "Hopefully you'll see good competitive football games. On the flip side of that, getting put into a five team region, and having some success that we've had the last couple of years, finding non-region games was virtually impossible for us."
To that end, Jefferson County will play a bunch of top ten ranked teams in the state in other classes.
